Heceta Head Lighthouse goes dark.

  • Posted on

Heceta Head Lighthouse has gone dark because its aging rotation system has failed, specifically the bronze carriage wheels that allow the 10‑foot‑tall first‑order Fresnel lens to rotate. These custom wheels—last replaced 13 years ago—have worn out and must be rebuilt by a machinist in Eugene. Until that work is completed, the light must remain off. This is only the third time the lighthouse has gone dark, since it was lit in 1894.

🌊 Why the Lighthouse Went Dark

  • Worn mechanical rotation wheels the bronze carriage wheels that rotate the historic Fresnel lens have deteriorated and can no longer turn the lens safely. This is the primary reason the light was shut off in March.

  • Custom parts, slow repairs Because the mechanism is 130‑year‑old technology, replacement wheels must be custom‑machined. Oregon Parks and Recreation is waiting on a Eugene machinist to fabricate the new parts. There is no firm timeline for completion.

  • Cost of repairs the repair project is estimated at $27,000.
